The Dead Beat Video
Magazine Vol. 1
Details: The 'Dead Beat Video Magazine' was an effort in the
early 90s to make a horror magazine not on paper, but on home video.
They churned out one issue per year and sadly only made it three issues
before going belly-up.
This first 'issue' is worth noting for a fifteen-minute segment it has
on Phantasm II. It's got a slew of vintage interviews with a
scruffy-looking Angus Scrimm, Reggie Bannister, Paula Irvine and James
LeGros. In all my time searching for Phantasm II materials, these are
the only interviews I've found with James LeGros and Paula Irvine.
The segment also boasts some sweet on-set footage. Best of all,
however, is when effects guru Mark Shostrom takes you behind the scenes
of his studio where he re-visits the effects props of Phantasm II three
years after they were used. He's still got the Tall Man back creature
and a few Angus dummies laying around.
Availability:
This is an extremely rare item and up until recently, I was unable to
track it down at all. Fortunately, copies have appeared on eBay for a
relatively low-cost.
Value: While
it's worth much more than this, I wouldn't recommend paying any more
than $10. I bought mine for $3.
